Tame Your Frizz Once and For All - The Ultimate Guide to Caring For Frizzy Hair

Do you feel like you’re the only one who has an ongoing battle with frizzy, unruly hair? We want you to know you’re not alone. Recently, during our 10 Days of Giveaways campaign, we asked our clients to tell us their most common hair concerns. Can you guess what they said? Yup, you guessed it—FRIZZ!

In this post, we want to help you understand what causes hair to frizz, why some hair types have more problems with this hair issue, the differences between frizzy and damaged hair, and give you professional tips for taking care of unruly hair. We’ll also discuss the best hair products for frizzy hair.

Get ready for the ultimate guide to caring for your frizzy hair, and say goodbye to bad hair days for good!

The Science Behind Frizz: Why Is My Hair Frizzy?

Dry hair and excess moisture in the air (aka humidity) aren’t a match made in heaven, and they do a number on your hair. Your hair contains water molecules and keratin proteins, and when a hydrogen bond forms between them, this causes hair to frizz.

The drier your hair is, the more likely it is to frizz. The reason is that healthy hair cuticles should lay smooth. If you look at a healthy hair cuticle under a microscope, you might notice it looks like fish scales. Take a dry hair cuticle, and it would likely resemble a pine cone. When hair cuticles are open like a pine cone, it’s easier for moisture to get into the hair shaft and affect the keratin, which provides shape and structure to your hair. When moisture enters the hair shaft, it swells and changes shape. The result is frizz.

So, that’s the science behind frizz—a very basic explanation. But, of course, we know you have more questions, like:

Why Is My Hair Only Frizzy When I Go Outside?

If you’ve noticed that your hair only frizzes when you go outside, especially on warm, summer days, you can blame humidity changes. Warmer air has more water than cool air, creating more hydrogen bonds between keratin proteins and water molecules. If you have really dry hair, it will greedily absorb the moisture.

Our clients with curly or wavy hair might struggle even more with frizz on hot, humid days. The reason is that these hair types tend to have drier strands.

Here’s some good news: You can combat frizz and have good hair days all year, even when high humidity comes to town.

How Do I Take Care of Frizzy Hair?

Using hydrating hair products and hair treatments are great methods for combatting frizziness, but there are additional steps to keep your hair healthy and frizz-free. Here are some of our professional tips:

  • Reduce heat styling

  • Wash your hair with lukewarm water

  • Avoid harsh hair products

  • Change hair washing habits

Reduce heat styling

Try not to use hot styling tools like straighteners and curling irons daily. Also, when you do use these styling tools, use heat-protectant products before applying heat to your hair.

Wash your hair with lukewarm water

We know hot showers feel good and can wash away the day’s stress, but hot water isn’t good for your hair. It has the same effect on it as humidity. Instead, it’s best to always rinse your hair with lukewarm water.

Avoid harsh hair products

Examples of harsh hair products include excessive lightning, bleaching, and using hair coloring products that contain high ammonia amounts. The best way to get healthy hair color is to have your hair colored at a professional salon like The Color Room, which uses gentle, non-toxic hair coloring products and has trained color professionals who genuinely care about your hair’s health.

Change hair washing habits

Are you still washing your hair every day? Excessive washing strips your hair of its natural oils and leads to dryness. Most people don’t need to wash their hair more than 2-3 times a week. Use dry shampoo in between washes to keep your hair fresh.

Also, skip towel-drying. When you rub your hair with a towel, this ruffs up the hair cuticle and causes frizzing. Remember the pine cone we talked about earlier in this post? That’s what you’re creating when you towel-dry your hair. Instead, blot your hair with a towel to remove excess water.

Frizzy Hair vs. Damaged Hair: How Do I Tell the Difference?

Frizzy hair is often mistaken for damaged hair and vice versa. Knowing the difference helps you know which hair products and in-salon services are best for your hair.

The obvious signs of damaged hair include split ends and breakage that causes uneven hair length. If you’re not sure your hair has these problems, check to see how stretchy your hair is after you wash your hair. To do this, gently pull on your hair. If it expands about a third of its length, and returns to its original length when you let go, your hair isn’t damaged. Now, if the opposite happens and the hair doesn’t return to its original length, it needs some hydration ASAP!

Combating frizzy hair doesn’t have to be a nightmare, especially when summer’s heat and humidity come to town for an extended stay. With the right hair care products and in-salon treatment services, you can have shiny, healthy, frizz-free hair!
