Expert Hair Extension Care Tips

Love Your Locks Longer

Our hair extension clients love our Covet & Mane hair extensions for many reasons: longer, fuller and more voluminous hair in a matter of hours; color experimentation without the commitment; and more.

We love seeing the smiles on our guests’ faces when they see their hair for the first time after an extension service. They can’t wait to show off their new looks — and we can’t blame them.

But what happens after the installation?

To maintain your hair goals, it’s essential that you care for your new locks properly.

At The Color Room in Wentzville, we’re committed to helping you achieve your hair goals. That’s why we’ve put together this short guide to help you maintain your extensions.

How to Wash Your Extensions

Washing your hair with extensions requires a bit more care because you don’t want to disturb the weft. Hand-tied wefts are more natural-feeling and virtually undetectable in your hair. Their craftsmanship is the highest quality you can find, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need a little TLC.

Follow these tips each time you wash your hair to keep your hand-tied extensions looking their best:

Tip No. 1

Brush your hair first to detangle it, but avoid the weft line.

Tip No. 2

Do you have two or three rows of hand-tied extensions? If so, it’s important to ensure each section gets cleaned. To do this, section your hair horizontally between each row and secure it with a clip. Wet and shampoo the bottom half first, washing the weft line well and then rinse. Repeat with the next section.

Tip No. 3

Condition your hair from the middle to the ends. Never condition the weft line.

Tip No. 4

Rinse well. You never want shampoo or conditioner to build up when you wear extensions.

How to Dry Your Extensions

  • Remove most of the moisture from your hair before you dry it with a round brush. Rough drying your hair helps you do this. We know it sounds brutal, but it’s not. Not only is it time-efficient, but it protects your extensions and your natural hair from unnecessary stress or pulling.

  • After you’ve washed and conditioned your hair, grab your blow dryer and dry your hair by separating strands using your hands. There’s no particular pattern or technique to follow. Just run your hands and dryer all over your hair until it’s about 85% dry.

  • Once your hair is mostly rough dried, then use your round brush to style as you normally would.

Make sure you use heat protectants.

Always add a protective layer when heat-styling hair with extensions. Actually, you should do this whether you have extensions or not. Heat protectants safeguard your hair and also hydrate it. Nourished hair keeps your extensions looking their best for longer. Like with conditioning, keep heat protectants away from the weft line and your scalp, focusing on the middle and ends instead.

Not sure what heat protectant to use? Your extension expert will help you find the best one.

Use Quality Hair Products

Excuse us for being blunt, but don’t cheap out on hair products. Drugstore hair products can contain heavy oils and silicones. These ingredients weigh your hair down and leave it looking dull and lifeless while possibly breaking down the extensions’ structure.

Purchasing premium hair products from our Wentzville salon and spa protects your hair. Also, because these products have more concentrated ingredients, you use less and save more money in the long run.

One way to save on premium hair products is to take advantage of our retail specials or sign up for our Product Club.

Follow the Suggested Maintenance Schedule

Caring for your hair extensions is so much more than using proper washing, drying and styling techniques. You also need to schedule regular maintenance visits.

Hand-tied hair extensions give you the most natural feel, but they require more precise professional maintenance. Instead of moving the extensions up as your hair grows, you must have them fully removed and reinstalled.

At The Color Room, our maintenance visits include:

  • Full removal

  • Scalp massage

  • Scalp/hair treatment

  • Shampoo and blowout

  • Reinstall and style

Are Hair Extensions Right for Me?

The allure of longer and fuller hair is certainly intoxicating — and we want to help you have the hair of your dreams. Still, hair extensions aren’t for everyone. While maintaining extensions isn’t incredibly difficult, you still need to consider the time and cost it takes to get the most out of your investment.

That’s why we always start with a consultation for hair extension newbies. During your consultation, you’ll learn more about the installation process, the maintenance schedule and what your out-of-pocket costs will be.
